Hello! My name is GlenM. I am from Hayward, California and I am a Beginner Filipino language student.
I am studying the Filipino language because my partner is Filipino and I will be visiting the Philippines (Batangas area) for the first time soon. I'm looking forward to more visits and I want to know basic Tagalog so I can talk with the locals.

Ha ha! We have been talking about that. If it is still erupting, I will be learning words like bulkan (volcano), mapanganib (dangerous), and ingot ka (take care or watch out)!
Tagalog words provided by my partner - not me!

Best
Glen

@albj "it is Waray"
You can tell them to slow down. "Dahan-dahan lang." (Duh-hun-duh-hun) Slowly.

@AkoSiMaganda Ah! Thanks for the "Dahan-dahan lang." (Duh-hun-duh-hun) phrase! Now I can say that instead of showing my blank look of stupidity that I usually show.

Also - what is the best way to say, "How do you say (any english word) in Tagalog?" if I just need one or two words that I don't know? (In spanish it was "como se dice " I think.)

@GlenM Hello GlenM, If you want to ask, 'How do you say (English) in Tagalog?"
You should say, " Ano sa tagalog ang (english word)? (Ah-no sa Tagalog ang (English)?

Exmple: 1. How do you say "drink" in Tagalog? - Ano sa Tagalog ang " drink"?
option 2. " Anong Tagalog sa " drink'? (Ah-nong Tagalog sa "drink"?

2. How do you say " beautiful" in Tagalog"? - Anong Tagalog sa ' beautiful'?

@jestrella18
This is more likely, "Paano sabihin sa Tagalog ang (english word)? (gramatically correct)
Paano is How in English. but it will be easier to ask "Ano" (What)
"Ano sa Tagalog ang (cook)? What is "cook" in Tagalog?

@AkoSiMaganda
Thank you for clarifying this. I'm using Pimsleur for Tagalog and I learned the Paano saying from them. "Ano sa Tagalog ang Cook" sounds easier to say. I like Pimsleur but they teach strictly tagalog (no taglish) so I feel i'm learning some words that might not be used as much. Such as Magsisimula.. my wife says that even though they may use that word, sometimes they just say start instead "start na ng klase".

@jestrella18 I'm happy to help and share what I have learned. Yes, learning Tagalog is fun and complex.

@jestrella18
Thanks for your suggestions - I too am using Pimsleur and find that sometimes their usage is different from my (native) partner. But I have to say that the Pimsleur system has helped me a lot by the way it keeps repeating previous words and phrases.
