In Filipino there's this expression, "pangakong napakò". Literally it means "a promise that got nailed". It's a funny way of saying "a broken promise". The use of "napako" with "pangako" is intended only as a play on words.

@Tagamanila
Interesting! So, you might know in the US we have expressions “You nailed it!” and “You hit the nail on the head!” ...which both refer to getting some right or doing something correctly...which is pretty much the exact opposite of “pangako napako”! So, it’s good to know the difference here...meaning I should definitely NOT be proud if someone talks about my “pangako napako”. ; )

@FilipinoChatAdmin

The verb "mapako" means "to be impaled on a nail accidentally". Based on that, whenever the verb is used we would practically always understand that it means "to have stepped on a nail".

Magsapatos ka at baka mapako ka. = Wear shoes as you might step on a nail.
Napako si John kahapon. = John stepped on a nail yesterday.

Maybe we can think of "pangako na napako" as "a promise that stepped on a nail". Ouch! 😀

"Napako" functions as a modifier so the linker "na" is needed. It may be expressed either as "pangakong napako" or "napakong pangako".

Pumunta ako sa Pilipinas sa enero para tatlong lingo and it was amaaaaaazing. Pagkaumuwi ako may trabaho at paralan kaagad at wala ako ng oras na magaral ng Tagalog. I’ve been keeping up with Barangay Love Stories on my 1 hour round trip to and from work hoping to not regress and I think it’s been working out alright. But when summer break hits in the beginning of May I’ll be right back at some more flashcards! Being able to talk with my girlfriend’s family and surprise everyone being a white guy with some Tagalog skills was the best and it was 98% due to this site so thank you so so much for putting in all the effort you put into this site!!

@calinga
Ang pinakapaborito ng awit ko... = The most favorite of my song...
Ang pinakapaboritong awit ko... = My most favorite song... - It's not "ng" but "na" that got attached to the end of "pinakapaborito" as "ng".

... awit ko sa karaoke = My most favorite karaoke song.
... awit ko kapag ako ay nagka-karaoke = My most favorite song when I'm singing with a karaoke.
... awit ko na nasa karaoke = My most favorite song that is in the karaoke.

Ito = This (one)
Eto/Heto = Here (it is)

Ito? = This (one)?
Eto/Heto? = Here (it is)? - Would not sound right.

We've missed you too. FilipinoChatAdmin and MyraBean were here in Manila last month and we were able to meet. In one of our talks, I mentioned you as one of those who seem to have simply vanished all of a sudden. See that? We already consider you as part of the "family". 😎

>Pumunta ako sa Pilipinas sa enero para tatlong lingo and it was amaaaaaazing. >Pagkaumuwi ako may trabaho at paralan kaagad at wala ako ng oras na magaral >ng Tagalog.

Pumunta ako sa Pilipinas NOONG/NUNG ENERO NG tatlong LINGGO...
PAGKAUWI KO may trabaho at PASOK kaagad AKO (sa paaralan) at wala NA AKONG oras PARA MAG-ARAL PA ng Tagalog.

sa Enero = this coming January
noong Enero = last January

Pumunta ... para tatlong linggo = Went for the benefit of three weeks.
Pumunta ... ng tatlong linggo = Went for three week.

"Pasok" means either "going to work" or "going to school". Since you already mentioned "trabaho" (work), it follows that "pasok" would already mean "going to school" and that makes "sa paaralan" not necessary anymore.

"para mag-aral pa ng Tagalog" = to still study Tagalog/for still studying Tagalog.

@Tagamanila Thank you! I plan to make more time to participate and contribute here again. I visited family in Maynila and Gensan last August and it was a great trip. It always is. It is really great to be immersed in the culture and I try to duplicate that here in the US too. I have been studying still but not as much as I could have been.

Thanks, @calinga and @rambo2fit! It's nice to get some positive feedback on the site. We're glad to have you both back!

I haven't listened to Barangay Love Stories, I'll have to check it out...I'm always looking for good resources for Tagalog audio.

@rambo2fit Small world! Myra's cousin and husband and their 5 little ones will be visited us this evening, and they live in General Santos. We visited them in Dallas the week prior and they invited us to see their home in GenSan. I'd love to make a trip one day.
