7,100 New Tagalog Example Sentences Added TODAY!

I've added code to import the Tagalog example sentences from Tatoeba.org into TagalogLessons.com, which they allow under their Creative Commons license.

These sentences don't have the accent markings or audio recordings like the ones TLDC admins add, but I think they'll be a useful as an added resource to help understand how different Tagalog words are used.

You can find examples in two places:
1.) The full detail page for each dictionary word now lists our example sentences, plus any matches from Tatoeba at the bottom.
2.) There is also a new, enhanced "Example Sentence Search" page here:

A couple enhancements for this functionality that are unique to this website alone:
- Searches and dictionary pages show both sentences matching the word, AND sentences matching the word+ng ligature.
- Our verb dictionary pages show sentences for matches for all aspects (tenses) for that verb, including all variations with word+ng ligature.

So...including the example sentences we've manually added, and the ones provided by Tatoeba, TagalogLessons.com now includes 18,262 example sentences for Tagalog learners out there!

Seeing as how I'm a sentence fiend, glad to see these tatoeba sentences added.

I wanted to suggest one thing (or two rather). I'll quote the guys at manythings.org

1. There are some members of the Tatoeba Project who create sentences in a language other than their own that aren't quite right.
There are sentences that are grammatically wrong.
There are sentences that don't sound natural even though they are grammatically correct.
There are incorrect translations.
However, there are also many members who contribute sentences in their own native languages. If you carefully look at usernames, you will eventually learn who the native speakers are and whose sentences you can trust."

2. The way the guys at manythings did it, they compiled a list of good users sentences to pull. a4esl.org/temporary/ tatoeba/native.html

search TGL to pull up the list of speakers.

Unless you've already done some of these! Either way, its great to have another corpus here. Just keep an eye, or two, on the new sentences. Maybe a warning explaining what the Tatoeba corpus is and how it may or may not have errors.

I'll add a disclaimer to the Tatoeba results. The verification of authors to sentences is quite a bit more involved on my end...not sure I'm up to that one.

HOWEVER...the biggest problem with Tatoeba is if you search for sentences directly on their website, they include results for "Translations of Translations."

This means...A Tagalog sentence was translated into Spanish by one person...and then another person translated that Spanish sentence into English...and Tatoeba shows the final English as a translation of the original Tagalog sentence...a lot of those translations get weird, and so I've excluded all of those from the search results...

@TLDCAdmin That's good. Disclaimer is all that is really needed. One thing you could do is reach out to Charles Kelly at manythings.org. He has already done a lot of the leg work here www.manythings.org/b ilingual/tgl/ and has about 3,000 "confirmed written by a native" sentence. They still sometimes are awkward but they're natively awkward.

UPDATE:
I found out Tatoeba provides a list of contributors' self-reported fluency level from 1 to 5, where 5 is perfect fluency.

So, I matched those usernames against the sentences database and I excluded every sentence contributed by someone with a 0-3 fluency level (even excluding all sentences where the user hasn't yet reported their fluency level, just to be safe).

It ended up removing about 11% of the sentences...but I think that's a fair trade off to have data that is much more trustworthy!

In the 5 months I've been active here, the site has really grown a lot! Keep at it. Its the defacto place to be for Tagalog. Good work TLDCAdmin!

That's great! One more thing, could you please reconsider implementing a full fledged forum like phpBB or IPboard ? I know you like to keep it simple for new users but you could probably integrate the sign on to keep it easy. You have many regulars now and I know I personally would participate a lot more if we had a full fledged forum to call home. I much prefer forums to chat systems also. Think about all the great information and explaining here that has been done and then forgotten over the years. In a full forum setup with proper threading of messages an expert could answer something once and we can link to it forever. It would be super nice to have a real forum to call home for Tagalog, one that is not trying to cater to every language under the sun. I know I'm speaking for at least one other power user here in making this humble request. It may be slow at first but once it gets going it should drive a lot of traffic to the site too. Please reconsider.

I agree that a fully fledged forum with threading, pins, and places to post different types of posts (rather than mashing intros, questions, etc all together) would be very handy.
