Hello! My name is Lee Cronbach. I am studying Tagalog because I moved to the Philippines in 2013 to be with my spouse, and need to be able to converse with his friends and family. I also discovered there is a lot of great poetry in Tagalog. And I admire the subtlety of the language, where different affixes can make all sorts of changes in meaning - sort of like a linguistic Rubik's cube. And finally, I am 74, and have heard that studying a language helps stave off Alzheimer's - but my age makes it harder for me to learn a new language than when I was in my 20s and learning French and German.

Hi, Lee. Welcome. You will find this site very interesting with a lot of input for questions you have, and the best Tagalog dictionary, by far! Don't worry about your age. It's true that language learners do best before age 5 or 6, but I'm not sure of how much of a difference being older than 20 makes. I'm 69, and I have no trouble studying languages. I was recently at a 'polyglot' conference in Montreal, and the most popular speaker there was a Canadian who, before age 50, only spoke English & French. At age 50 he started studying languages, and now (age 73) is fluent in 9, somewhat knowledgeable in another 9-10, and currently studying 2 new languages. He learns a language in 3-6 months. So, it can be done!
