Hello! My name is Perry. I am from North Carolina and I am a Beginner Filipino language student.
I am studying the Filipino language because I’m going to the Philippines in March and, while they speak English, I want to be able to better connect with them by making an honest effort at speaking their language.

Magandang araw Po, mabuhay
I bet you are looking forward to your trip next March. I was there for a few weeks last March at nakakatuwa babalik ako Dec 28 to be with my wife at pamilya again. My learning has been very slow because of efforts to have my partner (now asawa ko) spend time with me here in Australia so I have focused on the time rather than the language. I am keen to keep it going though as well as slowly picking up some of the local Hilygaynon spoken in our town of Bacolod. With March coming soon, I would suggest learning some phrases and let the grammar come in time. Just my opinion. My grammar is virtually nil while I focus on building a vocabulary base but I'm enjoying the experience greatly. Out of curiosity, what part of the Philippines are you going to?
Have a wonderful day

@Perry22983 I moved to the Philippines about 3 years ago from Cary North Carolina. To me the hardest part of the language is the verbs, it is my biggest headache. I just joined the site less than 30 minutes ago.

Have a nice day

@fanjoy seconded on the verbs, they just jam pack so much information into the affixes

@Fujishooter I’m torn on where exactly to go. A couple of days in Manila to meet an old friend. Afterwards, considering Palawan but a little concerned that it’s become too touristy. Still a beautiful place and think it’d be a shame to miss it. Wouldn’t mind doing a couple of wreck dives there. Then to the Cebu, Moalboal, Bohol. Dumaguete has been recommended by an old friend. Then there is Leyte, we’ll off the beaten track with great diving.

I’m open to recommendations. I love great beaches, laid back friendly locals, great food, and diving.

@fanjoy That’s awesome! Congrats on the move! I lived in Raleigh for 3 years while going to NCSU. I’m a good 10 years out before being financially able to make that move but I am scouting out retirement destinations! 😉

The verbs seem to be the most challenging part for me as well. Just a new way of thinking. Still believe it’s easier than Romance language conjugations or Slavic declensions! Have you had any major ahha moments on understanding their verb system?

Just wait, you'll find that tagalog verbs change in ways that would be represented by noun cases in other languages.

@Perry22983 Hehehe, I think I had one ahaha moment. I may have found a tutor near me in Lucena City so I will go there on jan 6th, when my kids start school. This place is a professional tutoring school. I'm excited to get some DIRECTION...lol

@Perry22983
I went to Palawan back in 2012 and it definitely wasn't too touristy at the time...there was a lot of that, but step off of the beach strip and you were in a different world. I would definitely like to go back some day. Although...we rode a tiny plane to get there, and it was probably the most "exciting" plane trip of my life with all the turbulence... ; )

@TLDCAdmin That’s great to hear. After further debate, I believe I’ve decided Palawan is a must for my first trip. May want to skip the tiny plane part though! 😂
