I've met an Indonesian fellow years ago and I was teasing him that we're relatives. Some words are common, as in "anak" - child. But he said Indonesian is more closely related to the Ilocano dialect, which is so different than Tagalog. Just an insight.

I think technically they are both Austronesian languages and so also related to Aboriginal Australian languages and PNG languages.
Other words in common that come to mind are araw, mahal, mura and balik.
