I haven't posted anything here for a long time because I've been very busy with my master's degree. I'm on holidays now and I would like to continue improving my Tagalog, but I don't know how to practice my listening, since Filipino videos often come with only English subs; it is not like in China where all videos come with subs in Chinese.

If those videos had Tagalog subs it would help me a lot. Luckily, the Tagalog language is very similar to Spanish, which means that I can easily transcribe whatever I hear, even if I don't understand it. This makes the whole learning process a bit more difficult, but that's how we become better, by facing challenges.

@SantSpain11

Cuanto tiempo!

I will give you two versions of corrections. One is based on the grammatical (G) correction of your Tagalog sentences and the other, based on your English translation and how we would express them in a more natural (N) way in Tagalog/Filipino.

= I did not post here in Tagalog because I got busy taking care of my master’s.

= I have not been able to post anything here for some time because I became so busy with my masteral studies.

(Although many Filipinos still say “Intsik”, it is more politically-correct here to just say “Chinese”). = I am now on vacation and I would like to continue improving my Tagalog, but I don’t know how to practice my listening skills because often the Filipino videos only have English subs, unlike those from China where all the videos have Chinese subs.

continuation...

(Change the verb to the subject-focus “matuto” because you are the one learning and it is the language that is your object. With “matutuhan”, it will be the video that you will be learning because that is the object of the sentence.) Mabuti na lang (It’s good that/Fortunately/Luckily), ang wikang Tagalog AY MAY HAWIG SA Espanyol KAYA ANG ibig sabihin NITO, madali KONG kopyahin kahit ano ANG marinig KO MASKI/miski/kahit na HINDI ko NAIINTINDIHAN. Mas mahirap ANG GANITONG proseso NG PAG-AARAL, pero SA GANITONG PARAAN TAYO mas GAGALING PARA sa MGA HINAHARAP PANG mga PAGSUBOK. (“Luckily” is “swerte na lang”, but that’s rather colloquial. “Mabuti na lang” (Lit: it’s just good) is the more standard way of saying it. “Kagaya” is “similar” but would need a specified basis for the similarity. “May hawig sa” is also “similar” but more in a general sense. There are those of us who say “miski”, but I think it is originally “maski” and I believe that it came from the Spanish “mas que”. We use “reto” in the sense of “matchmaking” or challenge, but in the sense of a “match-up”. The “challenges” you meant, i.e., life’s challenges, would be “pagsubok”.)

= If those videos have Tagalog subs they will be of more help to me. Luckily, Tagalog has similarities with Spanish that’s why it is easier for me to write/transcribe whatever I hear even if I don’t understand them. In this way, the learning process becomes more difficult, but in this way too will be become better, by/in facing challenges.

"...means that I can easily transcribe whatever I hear, even if I don't understand it. This makes the whole learning process a bit more difficult, but that's how we become better, by facing challenges."
Absolutely. The latest advice about learning (languages or otherwise) is that we should regularly test ourselves and especially with written tasks or question and answer sessions.
